What Is Reciprocal Linking History?

Article by nikhil

Just a few short years ago, there was a web page description tag called the Meta Keywords tag. It quickly became popular with unscrupulous web masters incorrectly applying keywords in an effort to rank better in the search engines. Google, and many top search engines ended up discounting, and ultimately ignoring keywords. It is still important to include this in your page, but for different reasons.

Increasingly, search engines have been placing more importance on a websites “connectivity” to other websites to determine how important, or relevant, your site is. This connectivity is done through linking. A link is like vote of confidence (in the eyes of the search engine) that says, “This site counts.” The more links you have coming into your site means the more “votes of confidence” that your site is worth a visit. Majority rules, democracy in action!

Who stuffed the ballot box?

Again, unscrupulous types have figured out a way to circumvent the system in an effort to gain position in the search engines. The technique was to build massive amounts of inbound links quickly, triggering the search engines to point to your site. The most effective way for the spammers (for lack of a better term) to accomplish this “fast linking” was to band together and form reciprocal linking pools, co-ops, alliances, and partnerships. The majority could no longer be counted on to vote correctly. How true!

Google quickly caught on to this method and had to make a decision. It was decided that the majority could not be trusted, and therefore their vote will be discounted. In fact, reciprocal links from sites that have a page rank of PR1-3 don’t even count anymore. What’s more, associating your site with large reciprocal link swapping programs could potentially cause the search engines to label your site as “unreliable” and have a negative effect on your over all web position.

Educated Voters Rule!

There is a new Vote in town, and it is called the “One Way Link.” It’s not really new, it’s just more important today. The search engines have determined that if someone is willing to “vote” for your site and receive nothing in return, than you must be worth a visit.

Every link into your site has a “value” or “weight” that is assigned by the search engines. Mathematically, it is very possible (even probable) for a dozen One Way links to have more value than 100 reciprocal links. Think of it as the “New Math” on the web.

The Hanging Chad….

“So why not go out and purchase some great One Way links and be done with it?” Is a question I get almost every day. The answer is simple. Google has a patent (yes, a patent!) on its method of determining a web sites overall valuation and relevance. Buying links circumvents their methods, and can absolutely result in being ejected from the search results altogether. What would happen if you woke up tomorrow and your website was no longer in Google?

In addition, that same group of unscrupulous types has come up with all kinds of methods to use the same tactics to turn those link pools into artificial looking One Way links. Google is a lot like the IRS – When they catch you cheating you loose.

The Votes are in.

1. Do not delete your reciprocal link inventory, or discontinue building reciprocal links. Just realize that they do not have the same impact. Swap links with sites that you feel bring value to your web visitor. Exchanging links is considered “natural” in the eyes of the search engines – that’s a good thing.2. Focus on building quality one way inbound links from sites that are in the same content arena as you.3. If you are involved in any unnatural link building practices you need to ask yourself if the risk is worth the reward.4. Provide outbound links to resources that are similar to your sites content.5. Consult your SEO consultant if you have any questions – they have your best interests in mind.6. Get creative – there is more to linking than just directories and websites.

Linking Ideas: Articles, Press Releases, Testimonials, Interviews, Contests, Forum and Blog participation, Social networks, Google Video deployment, and talk to every vendor (with a website) you pay for services, and tell them they owe you a link!

One Way Linking? Yes! Reciprocal Linking? No!

Article by Pavithra Vinod Kumaar

Before we jump into why and why not, we need to figure out what is one way linking and reciprocal linking. Why are they important for your website? And then we go to why not reciprocal linking and why yes one way.

Link building is a concept where you link your website in another website. That is, you place your website?s link in another website. So the link acts as an entry point for users searching for a particular or related keyword.

For example, let us say a user is searching for a particular keyword and comes across a site A. And you have placed the link to your website (site B) tagged to the same or related keyword the user is searching for. He/she might be interested in looking into your website for that keyword and click on that link. And voila! You now have a user on your website!

This way, random users can be directed to your websites from other websites through legitimate link building. There are various strategies to link your website to another. This is a high paying strategy, user traffic-wise, followed by mane SEO link building campaigns. That is because search engines have high regards for one way linking and reward the user with better page rank.

One way Vs Reciprocal

One way links are bit difficult to obtain, though not very much. That is because, only one website gets benefitted and the hosting site does not. So, previously websites used to exchange each other?s links and post it on their website, regardless of whether they shared related content or not.

Search engines found it annoying for two reasons. Reciprocal linking was done to manipulate page rankings and it was misleading to users. There were no quality links and the search engines turned up with websites that had absolutely no relevance to what the user was searching.

To banish this problem search engines rejected any sites containing reciprocal linking and such sites never came up in the search results itself. It is thought that good sites with high page ranking will never go in for reciprocal linking if the other site?s purpose is only to get higher page rank. This is the reason why one way linking is supposed to be more credulous.

One way linking is regarded highly because for the hosting website to place your link on its website, your content must be worth something. If the hosting website finds your website not worth it, it is never going to allow it.

Most websites will host links only to those websites which they feel will benefit their visitors. Hence only reputed, trusted quality link will be hosted. Since there is a barricade between the hosting sites and the sites wanting to build link services, it just become a more meticulous task.

Since the strategy here is more on grounds of mutual respect, the same is appreciated by the search engines.

Build Traffic And Ranking With Reciprocal Linking

Build Traffic And Ranking With Reciprocal Linking

Article by Ivan Kelly

The aim of a reciprocal linking strategy is usually twofold: First to attract visitors from the linking partner to your own site and, secondly, to improve your page ranking with the search engines. A higher page ranking, especially with Google, indicates more relevance when inquiries are made on a given keyword. Relevance encourages the search engines to send free, targeted traffic to your website.

Important Considerations

1. Build online relationships. Exchanging links with other relevant websites is a great way to start building partnerships with other website owners and may open the door for future joint venture requests.

2. Build your link popularity. Most search engines view sites that have many links to them as being important. So, the more sites that link to your site, the higher your site might rank. But again, make sure that all reciprocal links are relevant to your site or the search engines will penalize you.3. Avoid exchanging links with sites that have a huge link directory. If your site is listed on page 43 in your category of another site’s link directory, few people will ever see your link. Although a link will be generated to your site for the search engines, you will not receive much traffic from the link exchange. Try to exchange links with sites where your link will be displayed on the first, or at the most, the second page of another site’s link directory.

4. Don’t exchange links with everybody that asks. What advantage is there in exchanging links with a site that sells wedding favors when your site is about dog training? Anyone that visits the wedding favor site will be looking for information concerning weddings, not dog training, and very few will click on your link regardless of how high the page rank is for the wedding site. The key here is to exchange links only with sites that are relevant to your site or to your keywords.

5. The main goal of any linking strategy is to get more traffic to a website. Reciprocal linking can work for or against you in this matter depending on the site that you exchange links with. If you exchange links with sites that receive a lot of traffic, some of that traffic may be diverted to your site. On the other hand, if you exchange links with a low traffic site, you may divert some of your traffic to the other site without seeing a similar return. The solution is to exchange reciprocal links with a site with a page rank no lower than one level below yours and to try to exchange links with many sites with a higher page rank. Ideally, you would seek to exchange links with sites that have at least a PR 4.

How To Set Up A Link Page

The optimum way to set up a link page is to enter all links manually. Yes, it is time consuming but when you are starting out, this is the best way to do it.

You would first need to set up a page on your website just for your link categories. You can call this page anything you like such as Links, My Partners, Link Partners, My Link Partners, etc. Set up this page with the major categories and subcategories that are relevant to your site. Then, set up a page for each subcategory that will contain the actual links. Test to be sure that whenever anyone clicks on a subcategory that they are taken to the appropriate link page.

Prepare a short 3 – 5 line ad about your website or your product and include the URL to your website. This should be in HTML code for easy uploading. Each linking company has their own procedure, but generally, each time you ask to exchange links, you’ll need to copy and paste the other website’s HTML code onto your link page under the correct category and subcategory. You will then need to upload the updated page to your website.

Once this is done, let the other website know on which of your pages they can find their link. If the other website owner approves the link exchange, they should add your link to their link page and inform you on exactly what page you can find it.

Check to make sure that your link has been added to their site. If they have not added your link, you have the option of contacting the website owner as to why or of removing their link from your site. Mention reciprocal linking on any internet marketing forum and you will be sure to get a barrage of heated replies. There is a continual debate about the advantages and disadvantages involved in reciprocal linking and both sides make convincing statements.

If you do decide to get involved in reciprocal linking, join only well established link exchanges that allow you to approve or disapprove the link. Avoid link farms or link exchanges that will automatically exchange your link with their entire database regardless of the relevancy to your website.

Reciprocal Linking building Vs External link building through SEO Copywriting

Reciprocal Linking building Vs External link building through SEO Copywriting

Article by Anil Kumar Pammidimukkala

Link building is one of the easiest ways to increase a website?s search engine ranking and when the webmaster is faced with the seemingly insurmountable task, he or she resorts to link building or reciprocal linking to improve the rank of the website in any search engine. In the act of enhancing search engine rankings, one of the easiest and cheapest ways is to build links through reciprocal linking. Since the act of link building is often complicated and time consuming, reciprocal link building is considered to be one of the easiest and cheapest methods to enhance a website?s search engine ranking. While reciprocal link building is easy and only takes two or three emails, it does have its downsides.

a. You will need to find sites in your niche that are not your competitors. If you are in a niche like Viagra selling, this could be a difficult thing to achieve. Non-relevant links do not improve your rankings.b. Also, you will have to convince the other webmaster why they should have a reciprocal link with you. Finding such a symbiotic arrangement is difficult and has a success rate of 2-3%.c. For reciprocal link building to work for you, the website you are linking with should have a better page rank than yours, god help if the other webmaster is strict on this rule. For, if he is, there is a very minimal chance that you will get a reciprocal link form them.

Moreover, while reciprocal linking has its advantages of ease and cost, it does not give you any goodwill as publishing does. Link building is also achieved beautifully by writing niche content articles and publishing them across article repositories for syndication. In fact, each time your article is syndicated, you end up getting a new external link. If the articles are written properly and have good relevant content, there is no reason why they would not attract traffic. So article syndication link building gives you the advantages ofa. Getting exponential links whenever your article is syndicated.b. Getting more relevant traffic thus enhancing your Alexa TR ranking and in turn your page rank.c. Getting you better search engine ranking due to exponential links and attracting traffic.d. All article repositories have an average page rank and hence you can expect good results in addition to better websites picking up your content.

Achieving good ranking through external link building depends on the quality of content you publish. It is very obvious that if you publish trash or an article with numerous errors, the reader is put off and does not visit your website.

So, we come to the primary requirement here, you need a good seo copywriting service that can churn out good seo articles on a set timetable?! So, find an experienced freelance copywriter who can do justice to your copywriting needs and keep the process going until you are branded the best by Google.

Reciprocal Linking: Is It Still Worth The Effort?

Reciprocal Linking: Is It Still Worth The Effort?

Article by Donald Nelson

When the Internet was young, ten years ago, one of my most pleasurable online activities was to go to a site’s link page and follow the links to some cool sites. Equally fascinating was the prospect of having my site listed on some of those links pages, which prompted me to get into the activity now known as reciprocal linking, or trading links with other sites.

My, how times have changed! Now whenever a reciprocal link request lands in my “in box” I delete it immediately just like other pieces of obvious spam. How did this come to pass? As soon as it became known that Google’s PageRank system rewarded sites for incoming links, the trading of links, and even the buying and selling of links, heated up and most webmasters got into the act.

To make matters even worse the flood of reciprocal requests became a tidal wave in the past year as people sought to cash in on Adsense, Google’s contextual advertising system. Many sites have been constructed whose sole purpose is to get people to click on ads. The owners of these sites, in a concerted effort to get high rankings, have built complex link directories on their sites and are soliciting link exchanges.

The net result of these developments is that most requests that one receives these days are automated and will provide you with links on directory pages that have no PageRank and will hardly ever be seen by any human visitor. Another consequence is that when you, in good faith, send an email to someone requesting a legitimate exchange of links you may never get a reply because your email will be deleted by a webmaster, sick and tired of all the requests.

So is reciprocal linking a dead duck? The answer is a qualified “yes.” It takes a long time to conduct a link campaign these days, and it is harder to get links on sites with link pages that will generate traffic or help you with your search engine ranking.

So, don’t have big expectations from reciprocal linking. If you do want to build up your incoming links with this method you should do it in a highly targeted manner. Concentrate on trading links with sites that are closely related to yours. If you sell lawn mowers, then trade links with someone who is selling grass seed.

If you are not sure who might be a good link partner then visit the site of one of your competitors. If you have a Google tool bar installed do a “backward links” check which will produce a list of sites that link to your competitor. If you don’t have the toolbar installed just go to Google’s search page and make the following query:link:www.yourcompetitor.com

Look at the sites that are linking to your competitor and see if you can find link pages that have a good PageRank (3 or more) and are situated so that they could send you traffic. These are the “plums” and you should try to pick them, by soliciting a link exchange with those sites.

Also, scrutinize the pages where your link might be placed. If it is buried deep in a directory or not within two clicks of the main part of the website then you can forget about exchanging links with that site. If the link pages have more than 50 links sloppily arranged, then you will also get little benefit from such an exchange.

This is a time consuming practice, and the results are diminishing. Along with reciprocal linking you should also try other ways of getting incoming links: distributing articles and press releases online with a link back to your site and buying or getting free placement in online directories.

In the cases of article distribution and also directory placement, the biggest results will come when your article or directory listing is highly targeted. If you can get an article placed in a high volume newsletter or an oft-visited blog then you have hit the jackpot.Similarly if you find a directory that is important for your industry, a listing there may be well worth it even if you have to pay for it.

The reciprocal linking landscape has changed a lot in the past ten years, and even in the past one year. Reciprocal linking can be used judiciously but it is no longer the powerful traffic generating method that it once was.

Is Reciprocal Linking Worth The Effort?

Is Reciprocal Linking Worth The Effort?

Article by Guido Nussbaum

Having incoming links to your website is the single most powerful way to gain recognition in the eyes of the search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN. The types of links that you have pointing at your website, however, will make a large difference in the type of attention and recognition that you get from the search engines. Things that worked a few years ago are not necessarily the things that work well now. In order to stay on top of the search engine result pages, you need to stay on top of what the search engines require.

Several years ago, it was a fairly easy thing to get to the top of the search engine result pages, or SERPS by launching a massive reciprocal linking campaign. You simply sent out massive amounts of e-mail to webmasters offering a link to their website in exchange for a link back to your own. As a matter of fact, it really didn’t even matter what kind of website you were acquiring the links from, as long as the link pointed towards you. Google was counting all of these links as being beneficial and pointing to the fact that your website was an authority on your particular subject.

Once the word was out, so to speak, some people over used this method to the point where Google eventually stopped counting reciprocal links as being all important as far as ranking your website. As a matter of fact, too much reciprocal linking may have even been an indicator that your website was participating in something that they disagree with. Overnight, people lost their position in the SERPS as a result of this change in the Google algorithm. Does that mean, however, that all reciprocal linking is bad?

Reciprocal linking can still be a very important part of your search engine optimization plan. What you don’t want to do, however, is to rely entirely on this form of linking. Google loves links and they probably always will but you need to start developing campaigns that will result in one way links into your website from authority websites within your same niche. Links from off-topic websites and reciprocal linking will still continue to give you some weight but the all powerful one way link is what will launch your website to the top of the results.

Even though reciprocal linking may be close to dying, it is still an easy way to gain a little bit of recognition. There are still plenty of scripts out there which make reciprocal linking an automated process and if used properly, can make a difference in your rankings. As of right now, Yahoo and MSN still give credit to these reciprocal links and Google still credits them to a certain extent. Until they are totally dead, it will always be a good idea to include them in your marketing efforts as they may make the difference between you being number two on the listings or number one.
