The term viral marketing often evokes confusion and sometimes a little fear, but let me assure you it is harmless. If anything, when applied correctly it can be one of the most powerful tools for your business. Viral Marketing describes any strategy that encourages people to pass on a marketing message to others, creating the potential for exponential growth in the message’s exposure and influence. Similar to viruses multiplying, the message can reach a huge audience in very little time. Unlike computer viruses, Internet viral marketing requires the message to be appealing in some way, in order for people to consciously and willingly pass it on.

Long before the Internet ever existed, viral marketing has been practised as “word-of-mouth” promotion, using the media (press/radio/TV), or direct mail campaigns. If you are going to implement an Internet viral marketing campaign, you will need to create what is called a ”viral agent”. This is the item that you will use to illicit a positive reaction from your recipients and makes them volunteer to pass it along to their contacts. The quality of your viral agent will decide whether people do so or not. It’s also important that the message can be passed on easily. This might mean including a ”please send to a friend” button, or at the very least making sure that it can be easily passed on by email. It is particularly effective to have your viral agent hosted at one particular location, as people will be able to send their friends a simple link to it. This will also benefit the viral agent’s exposure in the search engines, allowing even more people to see your message.

A lot of planning should go into setting up an online viral marketing campaign. Not every campaign will work, or at its full potential so here are the main components that should be included in your viral message, in order to maximize its effectiveness.

1) Give away products or services for free (picture, audio, video, software, game, cartoon, poem, joke, survey, tip of the day etc.). “Free” is the most powerful word in a marketer’s vocabulary. Viral marketers may not profit from their efforts today, or tomorrow, but if they can generate a groundswell of interest from something that is totally free, they know they will have long lasting success.

2) Make it easy for people to share your message via email, website, software download, social networks, instant messages, forums, etc…Viral marketing works amazingly well online because instant communication has become so easy and inexpensive. From a marketing standpoint, you must simplify your marketing message so it can be transmitted with the click of a mouse and without any loss in quality or content. The shorter and more focused, the better.

3) Tap into people’s common motivations and behaviours (humour, greed, shock, inspiration, intrigue, urgency, compassion, desire to be popular, cool, or loved etc.) These fundamental human qualities and urges have resulted in millions of websites created and billions of e-mail messages sent. Design a marketing strategy that exploits them and you will have struck gold.

4) Use existing communication networks. Each person has a close network of family, friends, co-workers, associates, and a reservoir of their referrals. A person’s broader network may therefore consist of scores, hundreds, or thousands of people, depending upon her position in society. Network marketers have long understood the power of these human networks. People on the Internet can build huge networks too using e-mail, instant messaging, forums, social networks, torrents and other file sharing communities (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, MSN, Yahoo, LinkedIn, Flickr, etc…)

5) Take advantage of others’ resources. Writing and giving away free articles, so they can get on others’ web sites is a great way to establish yourself as someone who is knowledgeable in your field and will attract viewers to your site. Include your URL, brand name, and contact info within everything you post online and promote your business. This can spread like wildfire. Press releases can be picked up by hundreds of news sites as well and popularise your name. A video hosted on YouTube will not cost you any money in server bandwidth when more and more people access it. This way others’ resources are depleted rather than your own.

As you can see a well-crafted viral marketing campaign can explode your business online using a variety of outlets in very little time.

The basic form of viral marketing is not infinitely sustainable.

Funny or obscene emails which are forwarded by our friends is because of internet, with its email lists, web sites, chat rooms and bulletin boards, is an organism in which message viruses thrive. Creating them can be tricky — a lot trickier than traditional advertising messages. Unlike biological viruses, the hosts on the Internet, consumers, have control. Marketing viruses can backfire. But if you can create a message, be it an ad unit, a newsletter or a web site, that is both compelling enough to spread but that also firmly supports a brand’s values and objectives, you might have a winner on your hands.

Viral marketing relies on spreading the buzz. It works because it is a self-sustaining word of mouth strategy, which is also easy on the bottom dollar. Once a viral is released, it will most likely spread itself without the marketer’s constant backing. In India, it is a fairly new symptom. However, being true to our philosophy of shooting from the hip we have made the viral infectious across the country.

The truth is that the term “viral marketing” is in itself an oxymoron. In reality, the two have an almost inversely proportional relationship. The more viral marketing is planned, controlled and thus contrived, the less likely it will succeed; the less it is controlled and allowed to do its organic ritual voodoo dance, the more likely it will be to propagate among the so-called innovators and early adopters.

Some marketing people prefer terms other than viral marketing. A marketing phenomenon that facilitates and encourages people to pass along a marketing message.

You can successfully use Viral Marketing to market your business. Viral marketing depends on a high pass-along rate from person to person. If a large percentage of recipients forward something to a large number of friends, the overall growth snowballs very quickly.

Any marketing technique that induces Web sites or users to pass on a marketing message to other sites or users, creating a potentially exponential growth in the message’s visibility and effect. One example of successful viral marketing is Hotmail, a company, now owned by Microsoft, that promotes its service and its own advertisers’ messages in every user’s e-mail notes.

Every page on your mortgage website marketing should have an opt-in form where people can sign up to receive your emails. While text messages, Facebook and various other methods of contacting customers are important, email is still one of the most widely used technologies on the internet.

You can send various things via email:

• Upcoming promotions• Coupons• Newsletter• How-to information• Anything else that would be relevant to your customers

You can send an email as often as you like, and you can do it on short notice. So if you have a special event coming up or some other special promotion that you want to remind your customers about, it’s just a matter of writing a quick email and sending it out to them a couple of days ahead of the event which you can use these as a mortgage marketing tool to educate your customers about the products or services you offer, educate them about how to use those same products or services, or even just send monthly reminders that you are there to help if they need it or use it to send reminders of appointments or other due dates.

And perhaps best of all, email is a two-way communication tool so you can even use it to ask your customers for feedback. There are various ways to take advantage of this:

• Ask them what their biggest questions are about the products you sell, so you can tailor your advertising and other promotions to answer those questions.• Ask them what products or services they want or need that you don’t currently offer.• Get feedback and testimonials from them that you can use in future promotions

When you do this, you’re not going to get responses from every customer who receives your email but the responses you do get could help you make a lot more profit simply by providing the products or services that your customers are actually looking for. This is considerably more effective than the low-tech method still used by a lot of businesses – a notebook and pen because they can go directly into your email service’s database so you don’t have to manually enter that information yourself.

Another effective way to get people to sign up to receive your emails is on your mortgage broker website, itself. Add a lead capture form (known as an “optin box”) to every page on your website so people can enter their name and email address no matter what page they might be looking at.

To increase the number of people who sign up to receive your emails, you can offer them some sort of incentive for doing so. This could be something like a free report or white paper that will help educate them about the products or services you offer, or it could be some sort of special offer or coupon that gets sent to them automatically after they sign up to receive your emails or you could do both to improve your conversions even further to promote all the reasons why a potential customer would want to deal with your business.Explain why your company is their best choice, and what unique benefits you can offer. If you provide them with a report that helps them learn more about what you have to offer them, and then include a bit of a sales pitch at the end, it can generate a lot of new customers for your company.

You can also use what is known as an “exit popup” on your website in marketing your mortgage business, that can make essentially the same offer as the optin forms on every other page of your website, but it has been proven that these popup windows are more effective at convincing visitors to sign up for your email list.

You can also use other advertising media to help promote it. If you send out flyers, include a brief call to action on each one letting people know they can sign up to receive special offers and other information by email by visiting your website. Treat this email list as a valuable part of your business – because it is – and promote it anywhere and everywhere you can.
